Manchester United chief executive David Gill admitted the club had never actually wanted to let Cristiano Ronaldo.
But the Red Devils are finally selling the star, after the Portugal players was asking him to release to the Santiago Bernabeu, the end of the 2008-2009 season.
"We are not a club who need to sell. We have money in the bank so there is no pressure to sell their star players, whether it is Wayne Rooney, X, Y, or Z, "Gill said as quoted by goal.com.
"There is no desire at all from anyone at this club to sell Cristiano. He wanted to go and as a result, we broke the world transfer record. His philosophy is to maintain quality and attract the best players (to join with us), "I'm Gill.
"(From the sale of Ronaldo) we have 165 million pounds in the bank, but from the other side, we prefer to have money in the bank just 80 million pounds and Cristiano Ronaldo on the field," he added.
