Liverpool striker, Luis Suarez revealed that Martin Skrtel is the best defender that he has ever played with, and believed that the Slovakian International was deservedly awarded the Reds Player of the Season award.
The 27-year old was arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League during the preceding term, as he helped his side concede just 40 goals throughout their league campaign-bettered only by Manchester City and Manchester United.
In view of his remarkable last season, he was voted as Liverpool’s Player of the Season by the club’s fans in May.
Suarez, who himself was one of the notable performers during the Reds dismal season, let out his admiration for the centre-back and mentioned that he has not played alongside a better defender in his career.
He told the reporters in an interview, “I would say Martin Skrtel is the best I have played with. Martin is a brilliant defender and this season I think he has been at his best.”
In total, Skrtel made 36 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions last season, and also netted four goals, including one in the final of the Carling Cup against Cardiff City in February.
When asked about who was the best defender that he has ever played against, the Uruguayan footballer put forward the name of Thiago Silva, pointing out that his strong physique and brisk pace always made life difficult for the attackers.
He added, “There are many good ones I have played against but the most difficult would be Thiago Silva from Milan. He is a very good defender and is always a tough opponent. He is quick, strong and all-round a very good player.”
The striker also went on to reveal Gabriel Batistuta as his favourite forward, terming him the best player that he had ever seen.
He also explained his trademark celebration style, in which he kisses his right wrist after scoring a goal, revealing that he has got the name of his daughter tattooed on his wrist and that of his wife on his finger.
He added, “I always kiss my right wrist for my daughter (her name, Delfina, is tattooed on it) and I kiss my finger for my wife.”
