The Phenomenon was a special guest at the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich and watched his compatriot being rewarded with the Puskás award for his remarkable solo effort against Flamengo.
Speaking to reporters before the event, Ronaldo said Neymar could become better than three-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi if he chose to play in Europe.
''Neymar cannot just reach Messi, he can be better. He has too much talent to stay in Brazil.''
''He is the talent we have to export and allow him to dominate the world, to own it playing the game that he does. The importance and competitiveness of European football is massive.''
Meanwhile shortly after the ceremony the former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker revealed he had recieved some criticism for his comments, but insisted he still stands by his opinion.
''I have taken some flak for having said that, but every person has their opinion and it should be respected. I know people like to follow their idols close, but Brazilians also watch European games,'' Ronaldo explained.
''They love to watch Barcelona and Real Madrid. I have played practically my entire life out of the country and the peoples admiration is the same if not more.''
